This imposing Edwardian mansion is perched on a breathtaking cliff-top in the southernmost corner of Scotland where the Irish sea laps the coast. The House of Knock has truly panoramic views across the sea to the Mull of Kintyre and to the Irish coast. Enjoy drinks on the terrace at dusk and watch the twinkling lights of Larne and the lighthouses at either side of the channel.
There are three acres of enclosed gardens (with resident peacock), sheltered by shrubs, with an abundance of daffodils, fuchsias, hydrangeas and rhododendrons and from there the garden falls away to the secluded beach below, which is only accessible by foot. The cliff to the beach is unobtrusively fenced. Palm trees and yuccas attest to the mild local climate.
Inside, most rooms are south facing enjoying the coastal views and bright light. The drawing room has a grand ambience with its ornate fireplace and turret with sea views. Guests will also enjoy the luxury fitted kitchen with breakfast table.
The pretty harbour village of Portpatrick, with hotels, pubs and a pottery, is well worth a visit. Enjoy beachcombing, exploring the coast and keep an eye out for deer in the house grounds!
Dumfries and Galloway is blessed by the mild oceanic climate, thanks to the warming influence of the Gulf Stream, and the area is renowned for offering some of Scotland’s best gardens. Explore the Galloway Forest Park, the largest forest park in Britain, covering over 300 square miles of spectacular forest, moorland and lochs.
The park is full of wildlife with a red deer range, wild goat park and red squirrel feeding stations. Birds of prey also make the forest their home, with buzzards a common sight, golden eagles more elusive and rare red kites, successfully introduced to the region in 2001. Enquire about short breaks.
