The House on the Shore is one of the finest houses to be built in Scotland in the 20th Century, hidden away in a magical location.
It was built as the dower house of the Arbigland Estate in 1936 and still remains in the original family's ownership. Over a mile from a public road in any direction, the house is secluded and most rooms have magnificent views across the Solway Firth to the Lake District.
The estate is a haven for wildlife, forming part of the Solway SSSI and the Nith Estuary National Scenic Area.
It has historic associations with the poet Robert Burns and is the birthplace of the American naval hero John Paul Jones. It is also famous for its pedigree herd of Luing cattle. There is a first class shoot and shooting and roe stalking are available by separate arrangement.
The House on the Shore is centrally located to enjoy all that Dumfries and Galloway has to offer. Breathtaking gardens, ancient ruins, world class golf courses and the widest variety of scenery in Scotland - from the almost Cornish sub-tropical coastal belt of the 'Scottish Riviera' through lush farmland to the rugged vastness of the Southern Uplands. Almost every type of leisure activity can be catered for locally.
The house is
decorated and furnished to a high standard and is warm and cosy
for winter breaks. The nearby Shore Cottage sleeps 8 and may be
available for rent for staff or additional guests by separate arrangement.
A cook can be arranged.
